The first 13 years of the 21st century were among the hottest on record.
California has endured historic droughts.
Wildfires are ripping through the West—and getting worse every year.
The polar ice caps are melting.
Do we need any more evidence that Climate Change is a problem?
Apparently, we do, because only 40% of Americans strongly agree that the earth is getting warmer. Even though, well, the scientific consensus is that the earth is indeed getting warmer.
Are we in denial? Do we suffer from Climate Change Disbelief?
Not necessarily.
It’s more like, we know there’s a problem, and we know there’s more we could do to fight global warming/climate change, but Americans feel as a nation we shouldn’t shoulder the burden. Plus, we’ve got other problems. And, we haven’t been properly incentivized.
Fingers crossed that with these new incentives, we can now offer American refrigeration owners an opportunity to Retrofit their existing refrigeration systems to ArtikControl™. I do understand that for most, energy conservation is an intangible thing, something most of us can’t measure. The average American can’t measure the spread of wildfires, either. Or the shrinking of glaciers. So, it doesn’t mean anything. Global warming will toast our grandkids like marshmallows, but since we won’t be around to see it, and we’re not feeling the affects right now, why worry about climate change now? And anyway, Superstorm Sandy, Katrina, Harvey and all the other hurricanes we have endured all flukes, right?
So, here’s the thing: most of us don’t have the tools or knowledge to measure climate change, but we can measure the amount of money (or lack thereof) in our bank accounts—right now.
Yes, money is the greatest motivator (and incentivizer) of all. Need proof? Look no further than the gas pumps. When’s the last time you were outraged at the price to fill your gas tank? Those little numbers clicking away at the pump are enough to leave anyone shaking their head.
So, when we talk about climate change, we should be talking about how much it costs the average American on a regular basis. What they’re spending at the pump and or to heat and cool their homes. What they’re spending on electricity in their buildings. What it costs to clean up after a devastating storm.
Those are the ultimate tangibles and hitting somebody in the wallet is far more effective than spouting off scientific facts about how we need to, you know, save energy.
When it comes to climate change, we say, “Hit ‘em in the wallet, not over the head.”
