Common Walk-in Freezers Problems you Should Know About…

In a commercial kitchen, the walk-in freezer is one of the moist important pieces of infrastructure.  If you have started to experience any problems with yours, it is better to be proactive and address small problems before they become big problems and you are dealing with inefficient operations or worse losing inventory.

So, I guess how do I know if I am having a problem is what you may be asking yourself right now?  Here are just a few examples of common walk-in freezer issues:

Temperature is not cold enough:  Are you having problems getting your freezer to do its job?  Like Freeze? There are several potential causes of this problem.  It may be that the freezer is overloaded with product, which increases the burden on the condenser.  It may also be that you have frost build-up on the evaporator coils, which is causing the interior to warm up.  Or, maybe personnel have left the door open for too long, or there may be leaks around the edges or this may be the cause the temperature is running too high.

Drain Pan Problems:  Do you see ice in the drain pan?  If so, this could indicate a clogged drain line or a defective heater, as ice buildup in the drain pan is a common result of both problems.  Again, this is an issue you should have repaired as soon as possible before your inventory is lost.

Other Ice Buildup:  Ice can buildup in other areas besides the drain pan.  While you may think that ice buildup is natural in a freezer, this means that there is too much moisture.  The ice buildup can result in freezer burn on your product or cause other issues inside the freezer that can damage the system. Ice buildups on the evaporator coils can be especially problematic, so if you see these issues forming inside your walk-in freezer, it is important to reach out to your Refrigeration Technician.

Gasket or Door Issues:  Have you been having issues with your gaskets or doors?  Perhaps it has become difficult for you to reliably close the door all the way, or you have seen signs of an air leak.  This could be an issue with worn or damaged gaskets, or with a damaged seal around the door that needs to be replaced.

But as they say … Prevention is the Cure by installing ArtikControl™ WIF into your Walk-in Freezers.

ArtikControl™ consistently monitors your walk-in coolers/freezers and sends out alarms via text and email alerts when problems arise so that any failure is discovered and addressed as quickly as possible.

We monitor your systems 24/7 so that you don’t have to worry.

Summer is only beginning, but the outside temperatures tell a different story…

Rising temperatures may not be the only thing to worry about as we approach the heat of the summer months. While the warm air outside may be welcome after the crazy winter we had this year, it may result in increased energy bills that can really make you sweat. Those rising energy bills can lead directly to a reduction in profits and severely impact your bottom line.

The good news is you can keep your profits high even as the temperatures continue to rise this summer if you take appropriate measures to keep the energy bills down. Here are a few of the steps you can take to save energy this summer and keep the costs down:

Use energy-efficient appliances

It is no secret that your electrical appliances are the biggest consumers of power in your restaurant or dining facility. Those ovens, cookers, and food warmers are sucking up more energy than you may believe. Since they are the backbone of your business, you cannot get rid of them. However, some common sense can help you reduce power bills considerably.

For instance, consider switching off that oven if it is not in use. It does not make sense to keep it running if no food is under processing. You can also invest in energy-efficient kitchen appliances to upgrade your foodservice equipment. Upgrading this equipment will reduce your energy usage considerably.  Check out your utility Company’s Rebates on new Kitchen equipment purchases as there may be an incentive.

Manage your lighting systems

Your lights could be consuming more energy than necessary, so again it is essential to manage them properly. You could start by replacing your old, power-hungry bulbs with energy-efficient lights. They may be expensive at first but will save you a lot of energy in the long run. Essential examples of these modern low-energy lights are the T8 fluorescent bulbs which are up to 25% more energy-efficient than the old tubes. You may also consider making the switch to LEDs, which are longer lasting and save more energy than traditional bulbs.

You can also keep the energy bills down by taking advantage of the bright summer sunlight. Use large windows to let in more natural light so you do not have to keep lights burning all day long. It is also crucial to know where all your lights are located so you can switch off those in spaces not currently in use.

Control your air conditioning systems

Your customers will appreciate the air conditioner running at full blast when they pop in for a quiet moment away from the blistering sun outside, but you can be sure you won’t appreciate the enormous bill at the end of the month. Keep everything in balance. Satisfy your guests by running your AC when most necessary and switching it off or slowing it down during cooler times such as night.

You also must observe best practices to keep your energy bills down in the summer. For example, ensure your AC systems are in perfect shape by cleaning them regularly and repairing them when the need arises.  And finally, make sure access to the Thermostat is limited with your staff to ensure that they are adhering to the set Temperatures.

Finally, keep a close eye on your refrigerators and freezers

It makes perfect sense to keep your food cold and fresh all the time. The only challenge is that you need more energy to preserve your food in the summer due to the high temperatures, hence, substantial power bills. However, you can keep it down by cutting the cost of refrigeration.

Install Intelligent technology, such as ArtikControl™ to prevent defrost cycles from running on timers. Instead, those units should only operate when it is necessary to run them, and ArtikControl™ can provide on-demand defrost capability.

Living without refrigeration controls & monitoring is tough. So why not add ArtikControl™ Technologies to your ToolBox?

As many refrigeration technicians know, any tool that will improve his/her abilities to solve their clients’ emergencies effectively but more importantly efficiently is invaluable.  And a tool specifically designed to offer the best and most comprehensive, intelligent and interactive dashboard “Tool” is worth its weight in gold.  For many of Refrigeration Technologies’ Energy Service Providers and EaaS Companies, ArtikControl™ WIC/WIF, ArtikControl™ ACHC Controls and our respective Ease of Use Monitoring Dashboard, they have found the right tools to be used in the toolbox, making them look like the Refrigeration Stars in the eyes of their clients.

ArtikControl™ Intelligent Technology provides a real-time system functionality that not only offers the much-needed controls and monitoring but also saves energy; reduces the carbon footprint and money off the bottom line daily.  The system is taking readings of the boxes every minute and provides e-mail and text alerts when and/or if there is a problem with the boxes.  We have heard from Clients and Technicians alike, that they have peace of mind knowing that their product is constantly being monitored.  As a contractor, it offers a vital and reliable services.  You cannot put a price tag on peace of mind these days, especially during those long months of the Lockdown.

All of this makes perfect sense because the fear of losing perishable products is very real and can be very expensive.  I recently was reading a report put out by the USDA: “In the United States, food waste is estimated between 30-40% of the overall food supply.”  This estimate was based on estimates from the USDA’s Economic Research Service of 31% food loss at the retail and consumer levels which equates to 133 billion pounds and $161 billion worth of food in 2010 alone!!

Our Clients have shared that having user access to ArtikControl™ Dashboard who we have named “Arti” has reduced the number of nuisance calls which makes everyone that works on the refrigeration system happy especially the contractors that are repairing the systems.  Gone are the days of driving a long distance to check on the system for what may just be a minor repair.  In the long run having a predictive analysis/troubleshooting tool saves a lot of time and money.  Many of the repairs can be handled online remotely before the problem gets too large, for instance initiating defrost remotely if a coil is icing up.

Another tool in “Arti’s” Toolbox is the ability to see exactly when and where an issue began which is paramount as it leads to faster troubleshooting.  An automated text or e-mail is sent to everyone on the daisy chain notifying them that there may be a problem with the system.  The best part of the Dashboard is the ease of use for the Non-Technical/Non-Refrigeration Layman.

Refrigeration Technologies’ controls can be retrofitted into any refrigerated environment to include walk-in coolers and freezers; cold product display cases; stand alone/portables and reach-in cases.  All the clients are seeing gains in their equipment’s performance as well as loss mitigation, and by the way, between 40-60% energy savings (except for the Stand-Alone which are predominantly used for controls and monitoring temperatures).  Our clients range from school districts to universities; hospitals to pharmaceutical companies, grocery stores and restaurants.  Any company that is using commercial refrigeration needs to check out the tools in our ArtikControl™ toolbox.  ArtikControl™ Dashboard eliminates the detailed “stubby pencil record keeping” that is so time consuming and unreliable.  The controllers are taking readings every minute and at the end of the month will compile a report and e-mail to anyone that is put on the daisy chain.  This offers tremendous benefits for Clients that are looking for detailed historical reports.

Savings are great but what is more important for a large school district – not losing equipment to a catastrophic failure and/or worse, the food or product stored in the units.  While the savings are great, it is the level of protection and fault detection that has the underlying true value customers always share with our engineering team.

Don’t leave yourself vulnerable to power or equipment failures and food loss.
With Refrigeration Technologies’ “smart” ArtikControl™ system, you’ll never have to worry about a freezer of unusable food.

ArtikControl™ consistently monitors your walk-in coolers/freezers and sends out alarms via text and email alerts when possible problems arise so that any failure is discovered and addressed as quickly as possible.

What does it mean to be Reactive vs. Proactive when it comes to Refrigeration?

“Being Proactive is about Taking Responsibility for your Life”. Stephen Covey

Dealing with commercial refrigeration can be a blessing and a curse.  A Blessing in that your food and/or product is being safely stored for freshness and that when served or sold, your Reputation is at stake and so is it when at 3 am on a Sunday morning the compressor fails and without warning, your food in the box is non-usable.

This is where we tell our potential clients that the Rubber meets the road so to speak.

Reactive means you are reacting to problems or situations as they arise. I call it putting out fires! Sometimes you must go into reactive mode, but it is not where you want to stay all the time.  It will cost some serious money for equipment but more importantly personnel time.

Proactive means you look and see what problems can be eliminated before they happen and what strategies can be put in place ahead of time.  ArtikControl™ Technologies provides real time graphs and predictive analysis so that you know when a system is starting to go bad to prepare and obtain more competitive pricing then if you are reacting.

Working in reactive mode can be draining to not only yourself, but also your team. When you think about being reactive, what images come to mind? Stressful situations, overwhelmed, steam coming out of your ears!  To us in the Refrigeration industry, everything happens on a weekend and in the wee hours to boot.  How much will it cost you to bring personnel in to move food from a Refrigeration System?

Now, alternatively, what images do you think of when you think of proactive? Calm, happy, at ease, grace under stress. If something does come up that requires you to be reactive, you can handle it! You got this!  By having an Interactive Dashboard and Monitoring system, you and your personnel will know when the refrigerant is running low and/or when a compressor is starting to have issues.

Reactive vs. proactive can take many forms. It could be how you respond to stimuli in your life. It could be how you approach your business and workstyle.

In the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey, being proactive is Habit Number 1! He says, “Between the stimulus and response is your greatest power – you have the freedom to choose your response.”

Proactive people take control. They are always looking to the future and moving forward. They make things happen.  Refrigeration Technologies’ Engineers take great heart in ensuring that our Clients can anticipate when and/or if there will be a problem with the Technologies that we develop.

Here are 5 tips on being proactive:

  • Plan. Have a No Obligation Energy Assessment completed by a Refrigeration Technologies Engineer or one of our Authorized Dealers/Installers.   Knowing what you have and what your commercial refrigeration systems looks like is extremely important.  The Assessment will help to identify any existing problems that may exist.    While most of us have good intentions, sometimes we think we have more time than we do. We wait too long before we start planning and then we are rushed and cannot properly think through everything. Do not wait until the last minute to start planning it.
  • Create processes and procedures. By creating these, you and your team know what and how things happen. By installing the ArtikControl™ system you are not only getting monitoring but also the predictive analysis and proactive solutions but also real time temperatures; Interactive Dashboard use and energy savings to help the system pay for itself.  There is no guessing when the technology is installed.  We tell our Client’s that we provide a Personal Assistant to help insure no loss of product, freshness and ultimately Peace of Mind in knowing that your system is running as efficiently as possible.
  • Hire the right team members. It is impossible for one person to be able to do it all. Make sure you hire the right people to who can not only support you with tasks, but also help be your brain and help think through and plan out possibilities.  That is why by installing the ArtikControl™ Technologies for your commercial refrigeration systems, you are getting “Arti” your Personal Assistant who will monitor and take over the stress of your commercial refrigeration system.  To allow you to do other things.
  • Have regular meetings. It is important to communicate and have regular meetings with your team members. This ensures everyone is on the same page and knows what is happening.  “Arti” and our Engineers will be sharing information and data that is critical to your operations.  You will receive a CSV report every two weeks per location of the temperature readings so that at the end of the 30 days, you have fulfilled your HACCP Reporting!!  Gone are the days of the stubby pencil and manual reports.  How much time did that cost your personnel?
  • Anticipate problems and challenges. You know Murphy’s Law…anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. Think about what could possibly go wrong and then take it a step further and figure out how to prevent it.  ArtikControl™ is a proactive Tool in your Toolbelt when it comes to predictive analysis of your Commercial Refrigeration Systems.

Don’t leave yourself vulnerable to power failures and food loss. With Refrigeration Technologies’ “smart” food refrigeration, you’ll never have to worry about walking into the kitchen only to discover a freezer of unusable food.

Our ArtikControl™ system is constantly monitored online and sends out text and email alerts when possible problems arise so that any failure is discovered and addressed as quickly as possible. In fact, our technology functions like a personal assistant for food freshness! We monitor your systems 24/7 so that you don’t have to worry.
